From Big Dreams to Big Wins – How to Set Clear Goals that Actually Work
Setting clear goals is easy. Achieving them? That’s where most of us hit a roadblock.
The trick isn’t working harder, it’s setting goals so clear and actionable they practically guide themselves to the finish line.
Sounds dreamy doesn’t it? This isn’t about lofty wish lists or vague intentions. It’s about creating a roadmap that keeps you focused, motivated, and clear goals that align with your vision so that you can tick boxes like the boss you are!
In this post, I’ll show you:
- Why clear goals are your productivity superpower.
- How to set them using the SMARTER method (and more).
- The tools and techniques to keep you moving forward.
Let’s turn those big dreams into real results!
Why Clear Goals Matter
Goals are your built-in GPS, your North Star, your RoadMap… you get the idea.
Without clear goals, you’re basically wandering around hoping to stumble upon success. Spoiler: it doesn’t work. Been there, got the t-shirt.
Here’s why clarity matters:
- Direction: You’ll always know your next step.
- Focus: No more wasting time or energy on the wrong things.
- Motivation: Seeing progress keeps you going.
- Confidence: Hitting milestones reminds you what you’re capable of.
Quick Reality Check: A goal like “I’ll grow my business” might sound amazing, but it’s too vague to act on, right? But instead, try “I’ll sign three new clients in the next 60 days”. See the difference? Now I know exactly what goal I’m breaking down and action steps to get there!
The SMARTER Method and why it works
Let’s get strategic about goal setting.
We’ve all heard of SMART goals, but have you heard of SMARTER goals? I was introduced to the SMARTER framework by the VA Institute, and OMG, it is like goal setting on steroids. It makes your goals clear, actionable, and more importantly – exciting!!!! Because if our goal is exciting, we’re more likely to reach for it, right.
Specific: Define exactly what you want to achieve. The clearer the better. Ask yourself, what am I aiming for and why does it matter?
Measurable: Attach numbers or tangible outcomes to track progress. Ask yourself, how will I know I’ve succeeded?
Achievable: Stretch yourself, but keep it realistic. Ask yourself, can I realistically achieve this with the resources I have?
Relevant: Make sure your goal aligns with your values and your vision. Ask yourself, does this goal move me closer to the life I want?
Time-bound: Set a deadline to create urgency. Ask yourself, when will I achieve this?
Excitable: Your goals should light you up. Ask yourself, what makes this goal exciting for me?
Reward: Celebrate milestones to keep your motivation high. Ask yourself, How will I reward myself along the way, or when I reach this goal?
Other game-changing Goal Setting Tips
Because one size doesn’t fit all.
SMARTER goal setting is amazing, but there are other techniques to keep your goals on track:
Break it Down
- Big goals can feel overwhelming, so break them into smaller steps.
- Look at 30, 60, 90 day sprints. What is achievable in the timeframe you are working with on the project you are working with?
Visualise your Success
- Spend a few minutes each day imagining yourself smashing your goal.
- Vision boards aren’t just for that perfect office 😉
Align with Your Values
- We should be doing this anyway, but goals feel easier when they’re tied to what truly matters to you. Whether that’s freedom, creativity, impact, or a mix of all.
Track Progress
- Use a notebook, app, Google Sheet, or even sticky notes to see how far you’ve come. It doesn’t matter what you’re using, just track your progress. Otherwise how will you ever know when you’ve reached your goal?
Reflect
- It’s ok to not reach a goal, life happens sometimes and we adjust as we go.
- But what is important is to reflect on that process. What worked, what didn’t, what were the challenges, why didn’t we reach the goal.
- As long as we learn from the process, we have never failed!
Staying on Track
Even the best goals need a little maintenance.
- Schedule Regular Check-Ins
- Set time aside weekly or monthly to review your progress.
- What’s working?
- What’s not working?
- What needs adjusting?
- Set time aside weekly or monthly to review your progress.
- Stay Accountable
- Share your goals with a friend, coach, or accountability buddy who can cheer you on (and give you a nudge if needed).
- I know this great girl that actually gives a shit about you and your business, check out her Accountability Program here 😉
- Celebrate the Wins
- Don’t wait for the finish line.
- Every step forward is a win worth celebrating.
Setting goals doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.
With the right approach, whether it’s the SMARTER method, breaking them into steps, or simply visualising success – you can turn your dreams into a done deal.
